It’s December already? How about some baby reindeer?
This is exactly what I wanted to see on my dash today.

The kakapo is one of the rarest parrots in the world:It’s flightless
It’s the world’s heaviest parrot
It’s possibly the oldest living bird and
It has a subsonic mating boom that can travel several kilometres
*shuffles along a branch*
*bounces along the floor*
I love the kakapo so much it’s like a bird cat.
And given the opportunity, it will fuck your head.
OH MY GOD IM LAUGHING SO HARD
Oh gosh don’t ever let this sweet ball of feathers become extinct, how adorably silly!! *v*
Let’s talk about that subsonic mating boom.
Kakapos aren’t stupid. (Well they are, but we’ll get there.) The males stand in valleys or even small depressions to give resonance and strength to their mating cries. This lets the sound travel for kilometres in every direction. Multiple males often end up in the same area because it boosts their calls still further.
Are you seeing the problem?
Here’s the thing: the females can’t tell the difference between birds who called and birds who didn’t. They just go to the closest male.
Which makes the mating call an evolutionary drawback. It takes time and energy and puts the males in a open space easy for predators to find - and it doesn’t increase their odds of mating.
It gets better.
Because the calls go in all directions, sometimes the females can’t find the males at all. They get confused by the sounds and end up in the wrong area.
… Well done guys.
"Is nature a conscious thing or a set of circumstances" (from the documentary "The End Of Time")
Finally finished this one. Posted the WIP a few months ago. Also edited it down a lot to keep it simpler. Still got carried away with it though.
Trying to imagine a world that was starting to empty of spirits just as Jack arrived. How not all spirits have human shapes (note to self- never make it a whole environment AGAIN! Had to slap colors on the whole thing! Gah!). How hard it was, from the beginning, for Jack to have interactions even with others of his kind.
Looks like non-humanoid spirits have terrible communications skills. I’m looking at you, moon!
Might have to disappear for a few weeks-months (?), due to work. Possibly mostly just reblogs for a while.
I loved Rise of the Guardians, but this vision of Jack Frost is also quite compelling.
